Access to Information & Protection of Privacy Acts

Access to Information (ATIA) & Protection of Privacy (POPA) Guidelines

The Access to Information Act (ATIA) and the Protection of Privacy Act (POPA) work together to provide individuals with the right to access records held by public bodies while ensuring that personal information is collected, used, and disclosed responsibly.

These Acts are grounded in two core principles:

  • The right to access information
  • The right to privacy

As a local public body, the Town of Slave Lake (“the Town”) is committed to complying with ATIA and POPA in the collection, use, disclosure, and safeguarding of information. We strive to balance the public’s right to access government-held information with the obligation to protect personal privacy. While the Town must respond to access requests under ATIA, we are equally committed to maintaining the confidentiality and security of personal and organizational information as required under POPA.
