Slave Lake RCMP Warn Resident’s of Phishing Scam

Slave Lake RCMP News Release - Summer

Slave Lake, Alta. -  On October 10th, 2021 the Slave Lake RCMP were made aware of a phishing scam involving gift cards via email. The email asks the victim to assist them by purchasing gift cards, scratching the back barcode and taking a photograph. The victim is then asked to send the photo back and they will cover the cost and pay the victim back right away.

Resident’s are reminded to not send gift cards of any sort to unknown individuals via email or telephone. If residents recognize the name of the sender, contact them first prior to purchasing any gift cards. The Canadian government will never ask for gift cards from residents to assist solving a matter. When in doubt, contact the nearest RCMP detachment and ask for advice.

As always if you see something suspicious, report it to your local police. If you see a crime in progress, call 911. If you wish to remain anonymous, contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS), online at www.p3Tips.com or by using the “P3 Tips” app available through the Apple App or Google Play Store.
