[ARCHIVED] Province Scale Search and Rescue Exercise in Slave Lake

Province Wide Testing

Slave Lake SAR is very pleased to announce that we are hosting 4 Large Provincial Scale Search and Rescue events in and around Slave Lake at the end of April.

You may notice a variety of Provincial Search and Rescue Resources over the weekend of April 28 – 30. Please do not be alarmed if you see an unusual presence of Aircraft, horses, mountain bikes, ATV’s, first responders, military personnel, search dogs, Fire and SAR emergency vehicles, police resources and Ambulances in and around the community.

We are anticipating this to be a very large event, probably one of the largest civilian exercises of its kind in Alberta.

Friday April 28 is the local Emergency Exercise where many local agencies are working together to respond to realistic emergency and disaster training scenarios. There will be simulated and realistic responses from various local and regional emergency response agencies.

Friday April 28 there will be training workshops for Search and Rescue members from throughout the province, at Northern Lakes College. SAR members will hone their skills in Wilderness First aid, wilderness survival, water and ice rescue, low angle rescue, evidence searching, tracking and many more. In the afternoon there will opportunities for the general public to view Search Dogs doing a demonstration, and an Equine SAR team from southern Alberta demonstrate patient evacuations via horseback. This will be on the Northern Lakes College sports fields from 4:30 – 6 pm.

Saturday April 29 will be a Provincial Scale Mock Search – where SAR groups and special teams from throughout the province will work with local emergency agencies to respond to multiple simulated emergencies involving lost, injured or missing people, civil emergencies, and or disasters. The training exercise will be from 8 am to about 4 pm, and will occur in and around Slave Lake and MD of Lesser Slave River.

Sunday April 30 will be the SAR Alberta Annual General Meeting at the college. This will essentially be a business meeting for representatives from all SAR groups in Alberta.
