The Town of Slave Lake Operations department is planning to start the traffic line painting work on Main Street starting this week.
They will be implementing changes to the dedicated existing left turn lanes along some sections on the Main Street. Instead, there will be new pavement markings showing 2-way left turn lanes.
A 2-way left-turn lane allows vehicles from each direction to turn left using the same lane. Vehicles from both directions share this centre lane to turn left. It is permissible to cross the solid yellow line to enter the shared turn lane. Only enter the turning lane close to where you will be turning. Watch for oncoming vehicles in your lane.
When merging into 2-way left turn lanes, slow down and use your turn indicators. Be Careful! This lane is used by traffic from both directions. Wait for through traffic to pass before making your left turn. Remember, don’t travel in the center lane! Only use it for turning left where it is allowed. Also, don’t use these lanes to pass other drivers.
Remember when you see a double solid yellow line along the sections of the centre lane, then no crossing is permitted.
Reminders for safe turning:
- Check for traffic, do a shoulder check, signal, and when safe, move into the proper lane.
- Signal with enough time to provide a reasonable warning to other drivers and pedestrians of your intention.
- Check oncoming and cross traffic as well as the crosswalk to your left for pedestrians. Watch for both vehicle and pedestrian traffic.
