[ARCHIVED] Justice Reform Proposal Sent to AUMA from Council Passes with 96% in Favour

Adress from Town Council

Yesterday, Council sent a request for decision to the Alberta Urban Municipalities Association at the Spring 2021 Municipal Leaders’ Caucus. During this time, Mayor Warman advocated to other Mayors across the province to side with the Town of Slave Lake’s proposal for justice reform.

The proposal requests that the AUMA advocate for the Minister of Justice and Solicitor General to ensure the justice system is properly resourced so that all Albertans have timely and equitable access to justice. This is to be done through 3 steps;

  1. Addressing court backlogs that create long delays for trials, with many cases simply not prosecuted due to the Jordan decision;
  2. Reforming bail hearings so that people with local expertise are present to inform judicial decisions;
  3. Holding a public inquiry that determines the causes of and proposes solutions to recidivism and prolific offenders.

We are incredibly happy to announce that the decision was approved with a vote of 96% in favour. This allows the AUMA to advocate directly to the Government on behalf of Slave Lake which will gives the region a much larger voice. These decisions will help protect Albertans from repeat criminal behaviours, and allow much more timely access to justice. This is a huge win for Slave Lake, RCMP and all Albertans.

Attached is a PDF of the proposal for full details.
