RCMP Slave Lake issue warning after recent overdoses

Slave Lake, Alta - RCMP in Slave Lake are issuing a warning after two suspected opioid overdoses in the past five days.

On Wednesday, February 27, 2019, police and EMS reported to a residence in Slave Lake after a 26 year old man was discovered deceased. While a formal cause of death is yet to be determined, investigators believe that opioid use may have been a contributing factor.

On Saturday, March 2, 2019, emergency crews responded to a report of a 24 year old female in cardiac arrest. Medical efforts were negative and the person could not be revived. As in the previous case, opioids are believed to have played a contributing factor in this death.

"Our primary concern is public safety", says Slave Lake RCMP Staff Sergeant John Spaans. "These recent cases are out of the ordinary for the community which leads us to believe something very dangerous is in circulation. Anyone who chooses to engage in high risk behaviour, such as opioid use, is urged to rethink that choice."

Autopsies have been performed in each of these instances by the Office of the Medial Examiner. Until toxicology tests are completed, an official cause of death will not be known.

If you have information about these occurrences, or any crime(s), please contact the Slave Lake RCMP at 780-849-3999 or your local police. If you wish to remain anonymous, you can contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS), online at www.P3Tips.com or by using the "P3 Tips" app available through the Apple App or Google Play Store."
