The Town of Slave Lake has received calls over the last few days about the March Utility Bills. We have put together a quick FAQ sheet for residents.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
ABOUT YOUR UTILITY BILLS
What is an estimate?
As estimate is a system generated estimate by a computer, based on two years of consumption data on utility accounts.
What happens if I haven’t had a utility account for two years?
If you have not had a utility account opened for two years with the Town of Slave Lake, the computer estimates usage based on the data that is available.
These estimates are not as accurate as accounts with two years’ worth of data.
Why does the Town of Slave Lake Estimate Reads for the Utility Bills?
The Town of Slave Lake strives to ensure that utility bills are as accurate as possible. In some cases, water meters may need battery changes, regular maintenance, or there is local interference. If any of these happen and our staff is not able to complete an accurate read in a timely manner an estimate will be used.
How are the consumption rates collected?
Each month a staff member collects the meter reads with a receiver. The staff members drive around to all quadrants of town and the computer picks up the meter through wireless transmissions.
My consumption seems higher than it should.
To check to see if your consumption on your bill is higher than you believe it should be there is a simple do it yourself way you can check. Find your water meter located on your property, and do a visual inspection. The number that shows on your water meter should approximately match the consumption rate on your utility bill. In most instances, unless its an estimate the actual meter should be showing a higher number than what is displayed on your bill.
There are two garbage disposal fees on my March utility bills why is this?
The new rate for garbage disposal is $11.86 which was passed by council earlier this year.
The second garbage disposal line of approximately $14.95, is due to the garbage disposal fee not being fully charged on your February utility bills. This only applies to those residents who incur these charges on a monthly basis.
Those residents and businesses that do not have garbage pick up, will not see these lines on their utility bill.
